Our favourite, simple win SOLUTIONS!

We believe that little changes all add up to make a BIG difference. 2 Minute Solutions are simple, everyday swaps that help you tread more lightly on the planet. Whether it’s saying no to single-use plastic, switching to reusables, or cutting food waste, small choices really do add up.

2 Minute Solutions are about reclaiming your power, one decision, one action, one habit at a time. Every swap is a step towards a healthier planet.

1. Use your reusable bottles and cups

This one might seem like a no-brainer, we all have bottles and cups tucked away in our cupboards, but the key is remembering to bring them with you! In the UK, millions of single-use plastic bottles are thrown away daily, with estimates suggesting around 16 million plastic bottles per day (out of 35.8 million used) miss recycling and end up in landfill or incineration. Over 6.5 billion drinks bottles and cans are also wasted annually, causing significant litter and environmental harm.

Most eateries, cafés, and takeaway outlets are more than happy to fill a reusable cup or bottle, with some even offering discounts for bringing your own.

2. Use refill shops

Each year, vast amounts of food packaging are wasted globally. The EU generates nearly 80 million tonnes of packaging waste (including food and drink packaging), while UK household plastic packaging waste reaches around 90 billion items annually. Much of this is single-use, food-related packaging that often ends up in landfill or is incinerated rather than recycled.

By refilling using Tupperware, storage jars, or any containers you already have, you’re not only supporting small businesses but also significantly reducing packaging waste. Refill shops are going from strength to strength, you might be surprised by just how much can now be refilled, from food and cleaning products to beauty essentials.

3. Reuse gift bags and boxes

There are so many benefits to reusing gift bags and boxes, from financial savings to environmental impact. Producing new gift packaging requires raw materials, energy, and water. By saving and reusing gift bags and boxes you receive, you give them a second purpose, prolong their lifecycle, and reduce your carbon footprint.

Even better, the person receiving the gift can then reuse the bag themselves – creating a lovely, circular tradition of reuse.

4. Shop second-hand

It has never been easier to shop second-hand, both online and in-store. The benefits are endless, for you and for the planet. Second-hand items are often more affordable, and you can now find almost anything pre-loved –  from clothing and furniture to books and electronics.

By shopping second-hand, you help extend the life cycle of products while often supporting local businesses, charities, and community initiatives.

5. Do a bin audit

Have you ever really looked at what goes into your bin? A bin audit is an incredibly powerful way to understand what you’re throwing away each week and where changes could be made.

For example, if you regularly buy fruit and vegetables wrapped in plastic, there may be opportunities to buy them loose instead, eliminating unnecessary packaging before it reaches landfill. By becoming more aware of what you consume, you can identify realistic swaps that work for your lifestyle.

Sustainability doesn’t have to be overwhelming or time-consuming. These 2 Minute Solutions prove that small actions can lead to meaningful change. Choose one swap to start with, build it into your routine, and let it grow from there. Together, our everyday choices can create a more sustainable, hopeful future – one small step at a time.
